Some 104 youths aged between 11 and 18 from all 10 regions of Cameroon, including 10 physically-challenged persons, are in the South West Region for a 13-day National Holiday Youth Camp. Organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Leisure, the camp runs from July 14-27, 2015 on the theme, “Healthy And Enjoyable Leisure For The Promotion Of Peace In Cameroon.”

It is holding at Saint Joseph's College, Sasse, near Buea. The South West Regional Delegate of Tourism and Leisure, Elangwe Peter Pel, explained: "The objective of the Holiday Youth Camp is to bring together children from all the regions of Cameroon to ensure national integration, togetherness and exchange of ideas as they will teach each other their various cultures.

They will also discover new tourist sites and another region of the country. There are children who have never seen the Atlantic Ocean and so by coming to the South West Region, they will have the opportunity to see it. They hear of Mount Cameroon, the highest mountain in Cameroon and Africa. This is an opportunity to see the mountain and even take photographs.

During their stay in Sasse, the children will carry out cultural activities like storytelling, dancing, sports as well as receive lectures from invited personalities. The Regional Delegate of Environment will talk on environmental issues, that of Women's Empowerment and the Family on sexuality, while the Regional Delegate of Culture will give lectures on the importance of culture. The children will visit the Reunification Monument in Buea, the Limbe Botanical Garden, Zoo and the Bimbia Slave Trade site.

“The Ministry of Tourism and Leisure has realized that there is need for children to learn something while playing. The children are going to be taught how to produce shoe gum, local slippers and toy cars using pieces of carton, bamboo chairs and tables. We hope this will help them in future. Also, Francophones are going to learn English from Anglophones and vice versa," explained Ignatius Azinwuy, one of the monitors in the camp.

I am very happy to be part of this camp. It is not my first time of coming to Buea, but what catches my attention is the scenery of Tole Tea Estate,” explained Nkem Dylise Joan, a youth participant from Mamfe in the South West Region. Another participant, Evouna Jean, from Yaounde said, “I am very happy to come to Buea because it is my first time. I like the climate and plantations. I have heard of so many sites like the Reunification Monument, Bismarck Fountain, Mount Fako and the Botanic Garden. I hope to see them,” he said.
