At the heart of the unknown highway

subgrade-3_web-768x431

Very few Cameroonians are aware of the great transformation taking place in deep in the rainforest to link the port of Mboro to the major cities of the country

In the middle of this dark forest, in a place known to very few Cameroonians, in silence and sheer discretion, the construction of a vital asset of the country’s future economic and social transformation is underway: the Lobale-Kribi highway.  A great construction site where hundreds of major and minor stakeholders are at work on both sides of a separation gangway which gives weight to the majestic road on which hundreds of vehicles to and from the Port of Mboro will drive every day. As a matter of fact, it is in line with the huge investment in the Port of Kribi that the Government of Cameroon strategically decided to surround Kribi in general and the Port especially with supporting facilities and infrastructures which buttress the economic sustainability of the initial infrastructure, the port. Hence the decision to build as fast as possible the highway whose construction started on 1 January 2015, after the funding convention signed on 28 November 2012 between the Chinese company China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) and the State of Cameroon, through the Kribi Industrial Port Complex (CIPK).

A few key statistics to present the progress of construction works of the highway :

  • 250 billion FCFA: total cost of the project (around 453 million USD). 85% of the amount paid by EximBank China and 15% paid as matching fund by the Government of Cameroon
  • 42 months: total duration of the project, among which 6 months of study and 36 months of works. The construction started on 1 January 2015 and should be complete in June 2019

  • 23 months: actual duration at the end of June 2017 of monthly disbursements for the works. The progress of the works stands at around 60% broken down as follows: 95% of preliminary works, 80% of earthworks, 25% of the roadway, 35% of longitudinal sanitation, 85% of cross hydraulic structures and 60% of civil engineering structures
  • 38.5 km: total length of the future highway. The stretch will go from the village of Mboro to Bilolo in the Kribi 2 subdivision. It is connected to National Road No.7 Edea-Kribi through a 4.5-km track which will start at Provincial Road No.8 (Yaounde-Olama-Kribi-Campo)

  • 13 km: total length of the pavement layer already applied. The road surface has equally been applied on the left side, between PK0 and PK15
  • 03: number of bypass roads, that is, large crossroads servicing circulation on secondary tracks.
  • 02: number of bridges on the whole stretch. There is a 100-meter bridge on the Kienke River and another 140-meter bridge on the Lobe River.

  • 100 km/h: reference speed of the highway according to Chinese codes and standards
  • 60%: implementation of regulatory rules which combines the following tasks: waste management (sewage, garbage, fuel, etc.), health awareness technologies for staff, environmental protection, namely the maintenance of the base camp

  • 105 milliards: cost of works that have been already carried out by the CHEC, which represents 43% of the total amount of the aggregate order. The Ministry of Public Contracts granted the contracting company customs facilities close to 14 billion FCFA.
  • PK23 – PK38: the land in this stretch is not yet available as compensation measures have not been finalised. The committee in charge of assessing the property concerned submitted its assessment report and compensation decrees are expected.
